Hilfswerk Austria International (HWA) has constructed a building in Brčko District BiH (BD), containing 18 apartments that are reserved for socially vulnerable Roma families. The action was financed by the European Union and co-funded by the local authorities in BD. On 24th October 2017, Stefan Fritz, the Managing Director of HWA, together with Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, the Head of the EU Delegation and EU Special Representative in BiH, and Siniša Milić, the Mayor of Brčko District BiH, handed over the apartment keys to the Roma families.

Mr. Fritz wished all the best to the beneficiaries in their new apartments and announced the continuation of HWA similar activities in BiH. He also expressed his satisfaction that HWA is actively participating in the Roma families’ inclusion through construction of new homes in BiH and invited international donors and local authorities to persist on this type of support and continue investing in socio-economic integration and better future of socially vulnerable population.

Flood Recovery Project: Public call for beneficiary selection

callThe Flood Recovery Project is funded by the European Union, in cooperation with the entity governments of FBiH and RS, and implemented by the United Nations Development Program in B&H, in partnership with the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB), Hilfswerk International Austria (HWA), International Organization for Migration (IOM) along with the partner municipalities and cities. Project represents a continuation of flood recovery activities aimed at providing durable housing solutions, along with increasing livelihoods opportunities of the selected beneficiaries, including providion of agricultural assistance as well as self-employment initiatives.

Flood Recovery project is announcing a Public call for the beneficiary selection from the socially and economically vulnerable categories of population. Public call covers beneficiaries whose homes have been destroyed or damaged in 2014 floods.

EU provides new homes for Roma families in Gračanica

gracanica1Keys of twelve new housing units were handed over today to Roma families in Javor settlement in Gračanica on Friday 29 September, 2017. “We are finally able to live a decent life and be no different than any other citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina”, with tears in his eyes said father of five that slept with his wife and children for two months in a car at the garbage damp.
The handover of housing units in Gracanica marks a turning point of a better life for Roma families that lived most of their life on garbage damps in bad and unhealthy conditions. 
The housing units were constructed within the Roma Action II project, funded by the European Union in the amount of EUR 2.5 million and co-funded by local authorities.

Roma families with 36 family members including 21 children and youth, finally got proper housing and a perspective to live a decent life

 “This is an important day for us. We can now start a new life and enable our children to live a life worthy of every human being”, said one of the Roma beneficiaries who moved to a newly reconstructed house in the Tuzla area.

Roma families in Banovići move into EU-funded social housing buildings

banovici1The handover of the two newly constructed social housing buildings that took place in Banovići on 19 June marks a new beginning for 8 local Roma families. Thanks to the Roma Action project, which is funded by the European Union and co-funded by local authorities, Roma families who lived in bad and unhealthy conditions will finally have a decent home and a normal life.   
Khaldoun Sinno, Deputy Head of EU Delegation to BiH, emphasised that the EU was determined to assist BiH to ensure equal rights and better future for all its citizens, and also underlined that BiH institutions have joint responsibility to improve Roma integration and inclusion. “The EU invested BAM 10 million since 2013 in this project and we have built and reconstructed many housing units for Roma families. We are now in the second phase of the project. Last month we have already delivered new apartments to Roma families in Kakanj Municipality and we will continue doing so in the seven more municipalities. This is a concrete sign of improving your lives and enabling you to have the same opportunities and chances as any other citizen in BiH", Sinno said.
